Birmingham Showcase Festival @ The Rainbow
Saturday 28th April
It’s that time of year again when Birmingham goes bat shit for beats – the beats offered by the most talked about local brands like FACE, with Seedy Sonics, Shadow City and UTC and by DJs including Sub Focus, Art Department, Plastician, Alex Arnout, Cera Alba, Mele and many more.
For this Spring time blow-out, the nearby street will be closed, the whole of the sprawling Rainbow Complex will be taken over – all 6 arenas – and there will be live Art Galleries, food stalls, street performers and chill out spaces… basically a full on festival sized bonanza right in the centre of the city!
From hearing one of his tracks for the first time inside a club in 2003 to headlining Glastonbury in 2010, Nick Douwma aka Sub Focus’s rise through the ranks of underground jungle to become a major player in electronic music has been nothing short of spectacular. Initially known for air-punching, dancefloor dismantling drum & bass, Sub Focus has now become synonymous with music that draws from all corners of the electronic landscape, and has come to epitomise the ‘anything goes’ mantra of today’s flourishing dance scene.
Art Department is the brainchild of Canadian techno/house Legend Kenny Glasgow and Canada’s fastest rising star and No.19 label owner – Jonny White. As individuals both Kenny and Jonny have released countless critically acclaimed records and are regarded internationally as two of the most forward thinking, revolutionary underground producers out of North America. Their EPs, remixes and full lengths on labels like their own as well as Crosstown Rebels has defined a whole new Goth house sound in recent years so FACE are lucky to have them.
Plastician – aka Plasticman, his previous moniker which he had to change because of that other Plastikman – played a very important role in the dubstep genre. Not just for his tracks on the well known Grime compilation (released on Aphex Twins’ label Rephlex) but also for his dubstep show on BBC 1 Extra. His excellent qualities as a DJ make him a welcomed guest to every dubstep party worthy of that name.
Meanwhile the likes of Dogmatik boss (the label who broke Maya Jane Coles) Alex Arnout with his tech house bag of tricks and Hot Creation’s rising star Cera Alba, plus Mele and many more will all get in on the action along with 2, 00 happy ravers right in the middle of Birmingham… get involved!
